1947 – The origins
UFS was founded in 1947, in an industrial context undergoing major transformation. From the very beginning, the company focused on the production of cutting tools, with particular attention to taps, a sector that requires precision, metallurgical expertise and process control.
1960s – 1980s – Specialization and growth
During the 1960s and 1970s, UFS consolidated its presence in the market, expanding its range of taps and developing dedicated solutions for increasingly specific applications. Growing demand and the evolution of machine tools drove the company to invest in new production and control technologies.
During these years, UFS’s direction became increasingly clear: not to be a generic tool manufacturer, but a company focused on tapping, with deep and vertical technical expertise.
1990s – Towards applied research
At the end of the 1990s, UFS began a structured path of applied research, with the aim of systematically comparing performance, materials and geometries. This marked the beginning of what would become Site 2, initially established as a comparative testing center.
The collaboration between design, production and laboratory led to continuous improvement in tool performance and to the development of dedicated solutions for specific materials and applications.
2010 – In-house PVD coatings
In 2010, UFS introduced PVD coatings in-house, integrating into its production cycle a key stage for high-productivity automatic machining. Site 2 thus evolved into an advanced Research & Development center, with a metrology laboratory and an area dedicated to plasma coatings.
The in-house management of coatings makes it possible to control quality, repeatability and delivery times, further strengthening the company’s technical positioning.
2020 – Site 3 and autonomy in heat treatments
In 2020, Site 3 became operational, designed to make material preparation, heat treatment and metallographic control processes autonomous. The plant integrates turning, hardening, tempering, metrology laboratory A and an automated raw materials warehouse.
With Site 3, UFS completed control over the entire production cycle: from the steel bar to the finished tap, through all critical transformation and verification stages.
Today – Three Sites, one industrial vision
Today, UFS operates through three integrated production Sites, each with a specific role in the industrial cycle:
blanks and heat treatments, research and PVD coatings, grinding and finishing. This structure is the result of decades of consistent choices, targeted investments and attention to quality.
The history of UFS is not just a sequence of dates, but the progressive construction of specific know-how in tapping, which continues to evolve through research, field applications and dialogue with customers.
Continuity and future
Almost eighty years after its foundation, UFS maintains the same technical vocation as in its early days, with an eye to the future: process digitalization, integration of production data, and development of new geometries and coatings for increasingly complex materials.
The company’s history is the foundation of its current identity: a specialized manufacturer, with complete control over the production cycle and a clear responsibility for the quality of the tools it brings to the market.
