Threading oil filter mounting plates requires highly reliable tools capable of ensuring production continuity, thread quality, and tool life even under demanding working conditions.

Thanks to its R&D department, UFS has developed a complete range of taps specifically designed for this sector, engineered to operate on special machines and high-productivity lines.

Forming technology has progressively replaced chip-removal tapping, offering superior performance and greater thread strength.
As stated in the brochure:

“Roll tapping does not remove material but plastically deforms it, producing stronger threads with an improved surface finish and reduced tool wear.”

Why choose UFS taps for oil filters

1. Dedicated geometry (4–5×P)

UFS taps for filters feature a specific lead-in geometry, with a 4–5 pitch lead, which ensures:

  • progressive starting
  • reduced torque
  • longer tool life
  • stability even on ductile materials

“The special lead-in geometry (4–5×P) ensures superior tap life.”

2. Roll tapping technology: the ideal choice

Roll tapping is now the most widely used solution for oil filters, thanks to its technical advantages:

  • complete absence of chips
  • stronger threads
  • improved surface finish
  • longer tap life
  • higher and more consistent torque

3. Suitable materials

  • Steels <250 HB
  • Steels <850 N/mm²
  • Aluminium alloys (<10% Si)
  • Copper and brass alloys
  • Austenitic stainless steels <850 N/mm²

4. Unsuitable materials

  • Cast iron
  • Hardened steels
  • Materials with elongation <10%

5. Available coatings

The standard coating is TiN. The following are available on request:

  • TiCN – greater wear resistance
  • XP (TiN + WC/C) – reduced friction and cold welding

Available standard dimensions

Metric

  • M16×1.5
  • M20×1.5
  • M22×1.5
  • M30×2

GAS / UNF

  • 3/4–16
  • 13/16–16
  • 1"–14
  • 1"–12
  • 1"1/8–16
  • 1"1/2–12

Other dimensions, tolerances, and coatings are available on request.

Cutting or roll tapping?

Cutting taps

Mainly used for through holes, particularly with:

  • left-hand helix (forward chip evacuation)
  • corrected lead-in chamfer (form B)

“Left-hand helix taps represent the evolution of corrected lead-in taps, ensuring superior chip control.”

Roll taps

The preferred solution for oil filters:

  • no chips
  • stronger threads
  • longer tool life
  • greater production consistency

Recommended pre-hole

The pre-hole must be larger than for cutting taps, with IT9 tolerances or better, as indicated in the dimensional tables of the brochure.

Typical applications

  • oil filter mounting plates
  • automotive components for cars, trucks, and tractors
  • automatic lines and special-purpose machines
  • high-volume production

“Available in various thread types, dimensions, and limits to meet the requirements of oil filters for vehicles ranging from small to very large.”

Conclusions

The UFS range dedicated to oil filters offers:

  • optimised geometries
  • high-performance sintered materials
  • specific coatings
  • customisable solutions
  • superior tool life and production consistency
