UFS Technical Catalogue 40 – Taps, dies and threading tools

Technical Catalogue 40 represents a significant evolution in UFS production.
It brings together over 5,000 tools, including cutting taps, roll-form taps, gauges, dies and plug gauges, covering standard requirements according to DIN standards and offering dedicated solutions for specific applications.

Alongside standard production, UFS manufactures threading tools according to specific customer requirements, an activity that accounts for around 30% of turnover and makes it possible to meet particular technical needs in highly specialized sectors.

Product lines

UFS tools are organized into four lines, with increasing performance in terms of durability, reliability and machining behavior:

  • LINE – HSSE steel tools for general applications.
  • PLUS – Steels with higher cobalt content for superior performance.
  • S-PLUS – For tough steels, with advanced finishes and TiN-G coatings.
  • TOP – The UFS premium line, designed for specific materials, also in PM powder metallurgy steels, with PVD coatings.

Tools for specific materials

Each material has its own characteristics: chip formation, abrasiveness, thermal conductivity and elasticity. UFS tools are optimized in terms of geometry, base steel and surface treatment to ensure consistent and reliable performance.

Stainless steel

Stainless steels generate long chips, high heat and a risk of built-up edge. Dedicated UFS tools use HSSV3 or PM steels, geometries optimized for chip breaking and TXC treatment, which reduces adhesion and stabilizes tapping. Ideal for continuous machining and difficult-to-machine materials.

Aluminium, Copper and Iron (Light alloys)

Light alloys require large chip flutes and geometries that prevent chip nesting. UFS taps for aluminium and copper feature AZ alternate thread, high-sliding steels and micro-finishes that reduce friction. Perfect for high-speed production and precision components.

Cast iron

Cast iron produces short, abrasive chips, requiring stable geometries and highly wear-resistant materials. UFS taps for cast iron are made from PM steel, with a low cutting angle, pronounced back reliefs and TiAlN coating with surface micro-finishing. Guaranteed for long tool life and dimensional consistency.

Titanium

Titanium alloys are tough, elastic and have low thermal conductivity, making tapping complex. Dedicated UFS tools use PM steels, specific geometries — 15° left-hand helix for through holes, 15° right-hand helix for blind holes — and TiCN coatings to reduce friction. Ideal for aerospace, medical and precision engineering.

Nickel

Nickel-based alloys are among the most difficult materials to tap due to hardness, heat and tendency to adhesion. UFS taps for superalloys use high-strength PM steels, reinforced bodies, dedicated helices — 10° LH for through holes, 10° RH with chip breaker for blind holes — and 25° spiral flute versions with back taper. Designed to ensure operational safety and long tool life.

Tools for specific applications

General Purpose – For materials with Rm ≤ 850 N/mm²

General-purpose taps are designed for standard machining on non-critical materials and stable operating conditions. Ideal for ordinary production, maintenance and mechanical workshops, they offer reliability, ease of use and an excellent performance/tool life ratio.

Universal Applications – For materials with Rm ≤ 1200 N/mm²

Taps for universal applications are versatile tools, suitable for a wide range of materials and variable working conditions. Perfect when production requires flexibility or frequent material changes. The balanced geometry ensures stability and consistent performance.

High Strength – For materials up to 52 HRC

High-strength taps are designed for difficult materials, tough alloys and applications with high mechanical loads. Made from PM steels and available with advanced coatings, they ensure superior tool life and operational safety even in extreme conditions.

Technologies

Synchronized rigid tapping

Taps in PM powder metallurgy steels, ground with h6 shank tolerance, ideal for high cutting speeds and shrink-fit holders. Also available in solid carbide with central hole for internal lubrication.

Roll-form taps

Taps in PM powder metallurgy steel, with optimized coatings and surface preparation processes that reduce friction. Available with or without lubrication grooves, in 6HX and 6GX tolerances, with FOR or FORY internal lubrication. K-ROLL taps are also available, designed for high-performance applications on medium- to high-strength materials.

Heat treatments and PVD coatings

Tool hardening is fully managed and certified in-house at UFS. PVD coatings — CrN, TiN, TiCN, TiAlN — are formulated and calibrated internally according to the performance required by the application.
